Doctors Without Borders (Medecins Sans Frontieres, MSF)

MSF is an international, independent medical humanitarian organization that provides medical assistance to people affected by conflict, epidemics, disasters, or exclusion from healthcare.
MSF was founded in 1971 in Paris by a group of doctors and journalists with the aim of delivering rapid, effective, and impartial emergency medical aid. Today, MSF has become a global movement of nearly 68,000 employees from over 160 countries active in more than 75 countries around the world.
Our actions are guided by medical ethics and by our working principles: impartiality, independence, neutrality, bearing witness, transparency, and accountability. MSF is a non-profit, self-governed, member-based organization.

How It Works

Own Unique NFT Art

Each NFT in the Art4Care collection is one-of-a-kind, symbolizing the real-world impact of MSF’s medical missions.

Behind the artwork, RVig wanted to highlight a specific region or country, using data from two distinct activities such as medical treatments, emergency interventions, or vaccine distributions.

The data used are sourced directly from MSF, ensuring authenticity and direct connection to field operations.

The complex structures reflect the logistical, human, administrative, and political challenges faced daily by Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) in the field. Amid these layered complexities, circles represent direct human impact—number of vaccinations delivered, treatments administered, lives saved. Each circle is an act of care emerging from precarious circumstances.

Colours for each artwork are carefully selected from the MSF photo library, creating a unique palette of three colours per location, grounding the visuals firmly in the reality of each operation.

What potential does blockchain present to MSF?

more

As one of the world’s leading humanitarian medical organizations with a substantial impact on global health policy, MSF constantly strives to innovate in terms of medical research and logistical efficiency and to facilitate its processes.

For this reason, MSF is committed to exploring all potential opportunities to improve its operations and impact in the field.

It therefore seems essential to us to engage with blockchain actors with strong innovative and creative potential: Partnering with MSF would be a wonderful way of using blockchain in a practical way for the benefit of people in need.

Does the Energy consumption of blockchain related projects go against MSF’s environmental approach?

more

MSF looks into choosing tools, chains and projects with the least impact on the environment. By utilizing these environmentally friendly protocols, we aim to promote sustainability within the cryptocurrency ecosystem.

All of its projects for instance rely on Proof of Stake Cryptocurrencies, unlike proof-of-work (PoW) systems that require intensive energy consumption for mining. This means that participating in staking generally has a lower carbon footprint compared to traditional mining methods.

Isn’t it risky for MSF to invest in blockchain?

more

MSF only takes risks that are acceptable and manageable. Apart from developing its own risk analysis, we carefully factor in and builds on developments noted in both the sector and with other organisations and stakeholders involved in Blockchain.

MSF through the select partnerships it relies on for a project such as Stake2Care shares the risk with its selected partners (implementing & financial) that have been contracted for their expertise/experience in blockchain.

Why is MSF interested in blockchain Philanthropy?

more

MSF is in the process of diversifying its revenues without compromising the financial independence that characterizes the organization, which blockchain would enable it to do.

Overall, the Web3 offers a wide range of innovative fundraising opportunities for NGOs, and one of the Web3's assets is the committed audience it mobilizes, that gathers around values we feel are shared.

Today, MSF is working on diversifying the profile of its donors, reaching out to younger generations in particular, and sees the new generation involved in the Web3 as its potential future partners.

Because of the financial, human, and operational importance of MSF, blockchain philanthropy could rapidly evolve to become an inherent part of our donor engagement.
